What would moving this holding cost you?
Capital gains tax is what stops most people moving a holding from growth into income. Put in what the holding is worth, what you paid, and which account it sits in, and this works out the gain, what your allowance covers, and how long it takes to move the whole position without a gain to pay on.
The numbers behind it
For 2026/27 the annual exempt amount is £3,000, and gains on shares are charged at 18% inside the basic income band and 24% above it. Checked against HMRC on 2026-08-30. Anything inside an ISA or a SIPP is outside capital gains tax altogether.
The annual exempt amount for 2026/27 is £3,000, less whatever you have already used across every disposal this tax year.
What this does not cover
- It uses the Section 104 pooled cost, so it assumes you have not bought the same holding within 30 days either side of the disposal.
- It reports the taxable gain rather than a tax bill, because the rate depends on your income and this page does not ask for it.
- The allowance is per person per tax year across everything you dispose of, including property and assets held elsewhere. Only you know how much is left.

Where to next
- Plan the whole tax picture Capital gains is one tax. Dividend tax, wrapper choice and band thresholds shape what you actually keep.
- Project the income you are moving towards Once the switch is affordable, see what the income side of the portfolio produces at retirement.
- Value what you would move into A Dividend Discount Model for the income stock on the other side of the switch.
- UK dividend tax guide The allowance, band and wrapper rules, in plain English, for the income the switch produces.
